The life of faith, hope and love made possible by Jesus doesn't take place in a vacuum. It is lived out in the complicated mess of real life. And because that's true what we need aren't just principles and doctrines. We need examples and witnesses of real life people working it out in the mess. And that is exactly what Scripture intends to provide in the stories of our earliest forefathers in the ways of God - Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph. Their stories are not heroic tales of moral or religious superiority. Rather, they testify to a power outside themselves as a tow line to pull them through the muck of sin and selfishness into the life of faith, hope and love.
