The first two of the seven deadly vices are the rooted in pride's most natural tendency: obsessive comparison. While vainglory focuses on the way one is perceived among peers to gain a sense of acceptance and approval, envy sees the goodness of others as direct threat on one's own fragile sense of worthiness. The story of Cain and Abel shows how these separate us from one another, leading to murderous hatred and self-destruction.
