Scripture: Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 | Series: Ecclesiastes: Grounded Spirituality
Introducing the Teacher, his teaching and the tension he says describes all of life, the first few verses of Ecclesiastes is the voice of a narrator surveying the existential train wreck to come. He will ultimately conclude that the worship of God is our only choice in the face of life’s absurdity - but this fact doesn’t change the fundamental experience of futility the Teacher is trying to confront us with. Even though we have eternity in our hearts driving all our ambitions, he wants us to embrace our finite creature-hood, with all the joy and despair that entails. It is the life Jesus led and the freedom he offers in his death and resurrection - the freedom to be human, to let God be God. Our mission is to offer that freedom to a weary world.
