Scripture: Psalm 51 | Series: Lent 2016
Psalms of lament enable us to look at the darker side of our emotional lives to reveal our struggle with God. The object of these complaints vary - sometimes prayers of despair are aimed at God, prayers of confusion grapple with the circumstances of our world and prayers of anger focus on the grief caused by our enemies. But sometimes we find that we ourselves are the object of our complaints - our own mistakes, failures and transgressions. In those cases what we need are prayers of confession, and Psalm 51 is one of the most well-known models. Following it leads directly to the only source of hope in our confession, the love of God found in Jesus Christ.
